Bird count along the Bosque River Trail August 18, 2026. Yellow, Green, and SNAKESssss.
Weather - clear, light wind, temp ~80 degrees at 7:15am. Temp supposed to reach 104 degrees today.
Bird counts - number of bird types still low.
Yellow Warblers - While I was sitting on the bench I saw two bright yellow birds land in the tree directly in front of me. Although they only stayed for a few seconds I got a good look at them.
Belted Kingfisher - A Belted Kingfisher flew north along the river channel and landed on a tree branch sticking out over the Bosque River. It sat on the branch for a few minutes. It stayed long enough for me to get a few pictures.
Green Heron - Just as I was about to head to my car at the end of the south loop, a Green Heron zoomed north up the river and disappeared into the bushes at the side of the river. It must have been sitting on the dam, but I didn’t see it as I walked by the dam.
Snakes - I saw two large brown snakes in the puddle of drying river-water near the bridge. Both snakes were about three feet long. One snake had a Perch in it’s mouth. The snake had the Perch head-first. I think the fish was too large for the snake as it never managed to swallow the fish while I watched. Initially it was in the water, but eventually it crawled onto land with the fish still in its mouth. The other snake had what looked like a small Catfish in its mouth. It was having trouble swallowing whatever it was. I got pictures of this snake, but I can’t make out what the object in the snake’s mouth was. It could have been a fishing lure. Fishing lures and other fishing gear are all over the place in the river, and in the bushes and trees lining the river.
Puddle - the puddle is getting smaller. My guess is the puddle is now 10% fish and 90% water.
