Bird count along the Bosque River Trail August 17, 2026. SNAKE and Fox, but fewer and fewer birds.

Weather - clear, no wind, temp ~75 degrees at 7:00 am just as the sun was rising. Nice in the morning. Supposed to be 102 degrees this afternoon.

Bird count - not a lot of birds or types of birds.

Green Heron - I saw the Green Heron again today.

Great Blue Heron - I watched a Great Blue Heron fly across the hayfield and land in the hayfield tree. It landed on the top branch. It stayed there preening itself and surveying the surroundings for about five minutes. Eventually it flew south towards the park.

Snake - I watched a brown, three-foot snake swimming around the end of the shrinking puddle I have been watching near the bridge. It stayed at the south end of the puddle. It moved constantly with its mouth open, clearly trying to catch fish. I never saw the snake get a fish, but it may have been catching fish that are too small for me to see. I don’t think it was a poisonous snake.

Fox - Another BRT walker told me he saw a Fox near the bridge puddle. I did not see the Fox.

Puddle - The puddle near the bridge is shrinking fast. There seemed to be less small black Catfish in the puddle today. Predators are having a field day catching the fish in the puddle.

Puddle II - I have been watching a second puddle where the “new” path bypass is. Its a deeper, bigger puddle than the one at the bridge. So I haven’t seen any fish in it until today. The puddle finally got shallow enough that I could see four Perch clustered in a small bay at the side of the puddle. I could also see a large Carp eyeing the Perch.

Deer - I saw six White Tailed Deer. Five of them were in the patch of woods at the north end of the hayfield. The last deer, a fawn, was in the hayfield.
