Bird count along the Bosque River Trail August 11, 2026. A Hummingbird kind of day.
Weather - clear, light wind gusts (cool when they blow), temp ~ 75 degrees at 7:10am. Supposed to be about 100 degrees today. No rain in sight.
Hummingbirds - I saw four Hummingbirds today. Three of them were near the wild flower garden. Two buzzed in front of me as I turned the corner towards the garden. I think one was chasing off the other one. I sat down on the bench near the south end of the garden and I saw another Hummingbird in the garden. It may have been one of the original Hummingbirds, but I didn’t see one of the first pair return. The fourth Hummingbird I saw on the BRT’s south loop. I’ve never seen a Hummingbird there. This Hummingbird looked tiny. It flew low across the path in front of me. Then it flew up into a tree which had a Trumpet Flower vine in it. The tiny Hummingbird hovered in front of several Trumpet Flowers then zipped off into the woods.
Puddle - The shrinking puddle in the north part of the trail was noticeably smaller than it was yesterday. There were many fish clustered near the water’s surface. I counted five big Catfish, 27 Perch, and hundreds of smaller catfish in the remaining water. There are a lot more fish in the puddle. Its still deep in places and there are more fish deeper in the water that can’t be seen. The puddle water is a funny shade of murky brown-green.
Fish nests - The fish nests on the south loop are slowly disappearing. I counted only four distinct nests today with Perch guarding them. I did see four other Perch swimming around near the nests.
