Bird count along the Bosque River Trail July 26, 2026, swarms of dragonflies.
Weather - clear, light wind, temp ~80 degrees at 7:00 am. Supposed to reach 102 degrees this afternoon.
Dragonflies - Dragonflies were everywhere today. I’ve noticed several types of Dragonflies along the BRT. There are large black Dragonflies with white wing stripes. These seem to fly as individuals. They hang out mostly in the wildflower garden. There are groups of 20 or so smaller Dragonflies with yellow-brown bodies that hang out along the river in the park. Finally there are groups of 2 to 4 small Dragonflies with blue bodies. These Dragonflies are found along the south loop flying low over the Bosque River. They seem to prefer the wider parts of the river.
Fish nests - I saw a cluster of about ten circular stone piles in the Bosque River at one place along the south loop of the BRT. They turned out to be fish nests where the fish are laying their eggs. There was a fish associated with each nest. A friend of mine identified the fish as Perch. Pictures of the nests and the Perch are located in the picture section of this website.
Barred Owl - I saw a Barred Owl today in the same place I saw the pair of Barred Owls two days ago. The Owl took off when he saw me, but I got a good look at it as it flew up the river which is more open than downstream.
Belted Kingfisher - I haven’t seen a Belted Kingfisher in a while, although I thought I heard one chittering a couple of days ago.
