Bird count along the Bosque River Trail July 27, 2026. Barred Owls rule.

Weather - clear, no wind, temp ~75 degrees at 7:00 am. Supposed to get to 102 degrees today.

Barred Owls - A pair of Barred Owls seem to have taken up residence at a spot along the BRT. I have seen the Owls on four of the past six days. Twice I saw single Owls and twice I have seen both of the Owls. They spot me coming down the path and fly away before I get a good look at them. Today one landed in a tree and I was able to get a few pictures of the Owl. Its clearly a Barred Owl.

I think they may have a nest near the river. I’ve decided not to go down the path to the Owl area so much. If they are nesting I don’t want to drive them away.

Fish nests - The fish nests are the same today as they were yesterday. The nests are in shallow water. I’m surprised a heron hasn’t taken up residence near the fish nest cluster, as these fish seem like easy pickings. Maybe herons don’t like perch.

1 Painted Bunting - male

1 Great Blue Heron - probable - I heard a cry of a Great Blue Heron, and saw the top of a large bird flying up the river. But I didn’t get a good view of the bird.

1 Dove - type unknown

2 Flycatchers - type unknown - these were a pair of birds catching bugs over a portion of the Bosque River. They had red brown under wings, and a yellow belly.
