Bird count along the Bosque River Trail September 11, 2026. Many dead fish !
Weather - mostly cloudy no wind, humid, temp ~80 degrees at 7:15 am. Rained last night, but not much. River still dry upstream.
Bird count - types moderate, numbers low
Dead fish - much to my surprise there were many dead fish in the Bosque River in the southwest corner of the park. The stretch of river containing the dead fish was about 500 feet long. The dead fish stopped at a small set of ripples. There were no more dead fish from the ripples up to the dam. The stretch of water near the city water runoff pipe did not have any dead fish. I counted 62 dead fish. But I couldn’t get to the river along the complete 500 foot stretch of the affected part of the river. The dead fish appeared to be all sizes. In addition there were five or six large catfish swimming along the surface of the river.
Warblers - It seems that Warblers are moving through this area. I saw three types of Warblers today.
Orange Crowned Warbler - I saw three Orange Crowned Warbler’s today. They are a dull green color. They Warblers were scratching around in the dry riverbed near Puddle 2.
MacGillivray’s Warbler - I was looking for Hummingbirds in the wild flower garden when a yellow bird landed in a small tree in the garden. It had a yellow belly, brown wings, and a light gray head and chest. The entire head was light gray.
Say’s Phoebe - I saw a bird that looked just like a Phoebe, except that it had a light orange belly. That’s the exact description of a Say’s Phoebe in one of my bird identification books.
