Bird count along the Bosque river Trail September 2, 2026. The first five minutes. Copperhead.
Weather - clear, some high scattered clouds, no wind, temp ~80 degrees at 7:15am. Supposed to reach 98 degrees today.
Bird count - bird types moderate, bird numbers low
The first five minutes - Today I saw, in the first five minutes of my BRT walk; 6 Grackles, 1 Great Blue Heron, 1 Killdeer, 4 Cardinals, 1 Belted Kingfisher, 2 House Sparrows, 1 Green Heron, 5 Robins, 1 White Winged Dove, 1 Red Shouldered Hawk, and 1 Squirrel. I have never seen this many types of birds so quickly. Also, I’ve never seen a Belted Kingfish, a Great Blue Heron, and a Green Heron all in roughly the same spot at the same time.
Copperhead - I almost stepped on a Copperhead today. I walked down a spur trail towards the river. I just happened to look down and saw a small foot-long Copperhead about six inches away from my right foot.
Soft Shell Turtle - I saw a large Soft-Shelled Turtle sunning itself on the top of the dam.
