Bird count along the Bosque River Trail August 5, 2026. East meets West.
Weather - mostly clear but some high thin linear clouds - no wind - very humid - temp ~80 degrees at 7:00 am.
Kingbirds - Western Kingbirds have become common in the park and along the South Loop of the BRT. Today I saw a flock of about five Western Kingbirds sitting on low wires strung between posts across the trail from the south baseball fields. One of the birds seemed different from the others. Western Kingbirds have a light gray head, a darker gray back, and a light-yellow belly. The “different” bird looked like a Western Kingbird but it had a black head and back, and a white belly. When I saw it, I suspected it was an Eastern Kingbird. I got several good pictures of it. Sure enough it was an Eastern Kingbird. It was clearly hanging out with the flock of Western Kingbirds.
Fish nests - There are still eight distinct fish nests left with one or more Perch still guarding them.
Monarch Butterfly - I have begun to see one or two Monarch Butterflies per day.
Catfish - The small black Catfish are still in the remnant Bosque River pool. The pool is getting smaller by the day.
